Football in Kazan
Organised football reached the Volga region in the early twentieth century, and
the city's clubs spent most of the Soviet era outside the top
flight.
The Soviet years
Founded in the mid-1950s, the club played under several names before settling on
Rubin, taken from the industrial enterprise that supported it. It moved between the
second and third tiers for decades without reaching the top
division.
Breakthrough
Promotion at the start of the 2000s was followed by a rapid rise, and the club
won consecutive national titles at the end of that decade, the first ever won by a
side from Tatarstan.
European nights
The club's away win at Camp Nou in the group stage of the Champions League, in
2009, remains the result by which it is known outside Russia.
